The Old Man
The days of our years are threescore years and ten;
and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years,
yet is their strength labour and sorrow;
for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Psalm 90:10

Seventy perhaps eighty years. Depending on how one lives.
That is how the Bible describes our time on earth.

The old man, having already lived threescore, ten and one
of those years, reflects upon years gone by.

What could he pass on to the next generation?
Would his time on earth be fruitful?

He prayed so.

The old man recalls his childhood.
He remembers walking to Church every Sunday.

His Mom made sure he was presentable.
He cannot remember either parent going with him.

Their parents probably didn't attend Church with them.
They raised him the way they were raised.

He was told that Jesus loves him.
Following Baptist tradition he is baptized at age twelve.
He is saved. He is going to heaven.

Hallelujah!

He reaches the teenage years and stops going to Church.
After all, he is saved! Right?

Mom? Dad? Somebody?

He grows up gets married and raises his three sons
the way his parents raised him.

He sends them off to Church every Sunday morning,
thinking he has fulfilled his obligation to them.

He was taught the "Golden Rule" in school.
He knows a couple of the "Ten Commandments".
Perhaps this knowledge would be enough.

At age 47 he starts going back to Church.

At age 59 he gets baptized again, and re-dedicates his life to Jesus!

God, he cries, please forgive me for not raising
my children according to Your Holy Word.

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath:
but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4

He asks each of his sons to forgive him.

Perhaps this is what he is to pass on to the next generation.

A prayer.

A prayer of salvation for the sons & daughters
and families throughout the world.

We will all fly away!
